Horseback Riding Instruction
(year round, everyday)
Greenlawn Equestrian Center offers private and group horseback riding lessons for children and adults year round under our covered riding ring, round pen riding ring or our large advanced jump course riding ring.
Private Riding Lessons offer focused attention on the rider and horse and are recommended for first time riders, timid riders or those looking for specialized instruction. Private lessons may be scheduled 7 days a week between 9:15am and 6:30pm. Current riding level will determine receommended length of lesson. Our 30 minute lesson teaches Walk and Walk/Trot instruction, our 45 minute lesson teaches up to Walk/Trot/Canter and our 60 minute lesson teaches beginning thru advanced jumping instruction. Lesson length is increased as students riding level advances which allows for a safe lesson for both horse and rider.
Group Riding Lessons include up to four riders and horses in the ring being taught by a single instructor. Beginner level groups may have horse walkers to assist with the control of the horse as riders learn proper positioning and balance on the horse. See our Group Riding Class Schedule for days and times for our group classes. New riders to GEC wishing to take group lessons must begin with our Beginner Walk class until they are comfortable riding independently then with trainer approval will move up to our Advanced Beginner Walk class.
Evaluation Lesson - If you have experience riding but are new to GEC you may take a 30 min EVALUATION lesson which is a private lesson to properly evaluate a riders current riding level from which the instructor will recommend which class or classes would be most beneficial for your child based on their riding level and riding goals.
What Is Required A recent Riding Agreement MUST be completed and signed prior to your first riding instruction lesson and MUST be updated on an annual basis. Riders are required to wear an approved equestrian helmet (we can provide one if needed), riding boots (boot with a low heel) and long pants. Other recommended although not required equipment may include riding gloves, riding pants and a riding vest. Please refer to the column to the right for our trainers recommendations of reasonably priced quality equipment for riders or call for a recommended supplier in our area.

Schooling Shows
Twice a year we hold a Schooling Show in the Fall and Spring, which is a fun and relaxed way for our students to demonstrate how much they have learned for their friends and family. Our schooling shows are scheduled on a Sunday in November and May. This show is for our current lesson students only and friends and family are encouraged to attend this fun event. Food and refreshments will be available. For more information see our Prize List and Registration Form. To view pictures of our most recent schooling show click here.
Riding Specials
Check for any special events and discounts on our home page. A favorite special is our discounted riding lessons during school holidays.
Gift Certificates
Riding Instruction Gift Certificates are available for single lessons or lesson packages. Makes a great gift for birthday, holiday or any special occasion. Gift certificates may be purchased online, over the phone or at our facility.
Horsemanship Classes
A great supplement to riding lessons is Horsemanship Classes and all beginner students are encouraged to take horsemanship classes to learn more about horses and how you can become a better rider!
Volunteer Program
At GEC we have a large group of dedicated and helpful volunteers that help out with our various activities around the barn. These volunteers help out with barn chores, tacking and un-tacking horses, grooming, feeding, hand-walking horses during beginner lessons, side walking during pony rides, and even help out and birthday parties!
Volunteers that are in our lesson program earn “points” for working and eventually work up to a riding voucher which can be used for a free group riding lesson. Anyone over the age of 10 can be a volunteer, regardless riding level! It’s a great way to learn more through hands on experience.
What does it take to become a volunteer? Our volunteers go through a training program before they are allowed to volunteer for activities to insure their safety and the safety of the horses. All volunteers must take a training class regardless of age or experience. After volunteers complete the train courses and have been cleared to begin volunteering they will be told which volunteering opportunities they are qualified for.
Beyond The Rainbow 6 week Program
Effective Spring Session 2012 the Girl Scouts of American will no longer be offering the Beyond the Rainbow program. Greenlawn Equestrian Center will however continue to offer these hour classes which include both riding and horsecare. See above for information about our Beginner 60min classes or call or email for additional information.
Scout Troop and Group Classes
Greenlawn Equestrian Center welcomes troops and classes to come for the day to visit our facility, and learn about our horses! Classes are approximately one hour long and teach the basics of horse-care along with a horse or pony ride. Call to schedule a convenient date and have fun learning about horses with others. We also offer year end pony parties for troops and classes - for more information see our Pony Party page - parties are a 2 hour event which includes pony/horse ride, horsemanship lesson, craft, pizza and drinks!
